Buyer’s Guide

Budget

Before you run out and buy all the accessories, set a budget. Keep in mind how much you want to spend on the costume in total. If you like, you can even go a bit further and set separate budgets for specific parts of your costume such as clothing, makeup and wig. This will help prevent overspending.

The good news is that there are costume bits and pieces at every price point. You are sure to find something that will work within your budget. Don’t forget to look at what you already have too. You may be able to repurpose an old bridesmaid dress, a hand me down suit, or cape from a previous costume.

DIY v. Finished

Once you establish a budget, consider if you want to purchase a fully finished costume or go more DIY.

A pro to a finished costume is the work is all done-easy peasy. All you have to do is add to cart and you’re set.

A con is that the costume may be similar to others you run into on Halloween night. Not a deal breaker, but something to consider. Finished costumes can be more expensive than DIY costumes. If budget is a primary concern, and you can’t find anything in your price range, consider DIY.

If you decide to go the DIY route a pro is the costume will be 100% unique to you. You definitely will not run into anyone else wearing the same outfit. Another pro for DIY costumes is cost. They can generally be more affordable than others.

A con is that it can take some time to compile and create your costume. Be sure you have adequate time if you select this option. An investment in time, but you’ll walk away with a one-of-a-kind outfit to remember.

Style Inspiration

Consider your style inspiration or style icons. There are so-so many glamorous options out there. From point in time inspirations like old Hollywood, regency, or 1970s, to specific people like Beyonce or Cher. There is a lot to choose from.

There’s no better place to start than with the queen of old Hollywood glamour herself, Audrey Hepburn. This look is one of her most glamorous as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The sleek black formal gown, sunglasses, gloves, tiara and tons of pearls bring-the-glamour. Go for bold eyeliner and keep a minimal lip to stay true to the inspiration. Don’t forget the chic updo to complete the look.

2. Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Does it get more glam than Beyoncé and Jay-Z? No, never! Ciara and Russel Wilson did a great job with their Halloween costumes emulating the power couple. Don’t you agree?

These shiny silky satin suits with gorgeous sparkly jewelry are the epitome of modern GLAM. Add a chic belt and big bouncy hair to complete the look. We can’t see their shoes in this photo-but it’s safe to say they are amazing-wear your best. Don’t have a bright colored satin suit on hand? Consider silky pajama sets, or sleek pants and tops you already have on hand.

3. Bridgerton

Bring the glamour in a regency inspired look straight from the pages or screen of Bridgerton. There are a lot of glamorous looks from tailored suits to gorgeous gowns. Sport a look with dainty gloves and shawl for a promenade in the park.

Or go for an evening wear look with pearls and feathers or a velvet waistcoat. Pay close attention as the hairstyles are key here as well.  Makeup looks are minimal and let the over the top costumes take center stage.

4. Cruella DeVill

With the release of Disney’s latest origin story comes a new very glamorous version of one of our favorite villains. Wear your favorite black or red evening gown and accentuate with a great wig.

A Dalmatian coat or scarf is not required here, but a cane or a cape would be fun! If you have a black leather jacket-even better. Add a cigarette holder and long gloves for extra attitude.

5. Flapper

We’ve all seen a flapper before, but this year make it GLAM! Start with gorgeous makeup that highlights your eyes and lips. Find a sparkly dress and an even sparklier hair accessory.

Add a faux fur coat, stockings, and lots of jewelry. Think less great depression speakeasy and more Great Gatsby. More is more! Bonus points if you add a champagne glass or cigarette holder. We plan to draw our inspiration from this photo of Beyoncé and Jay-Z.

6. Witch

A glamorous witch is one of the easiest glamorous looks to pull off. Think witch, but high fashion. Less of a Hocus Pocus vibe and more Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams in Oz the Great and Powerful. Start with a gorgeous gown or suit.

Darker colors are best unless you’re going for a good witch look. Choose a chic witch’s hat or headpiece to match. Bonus points for a cape! (Always bonus points for a glamorous cape.)

Add sultry makeup accentuating both eyes and lips. Pair the whole thing with glamorous accessories and you’re ready to go!

7. Studio 54

Establish your 70’s Icon status as a guest at Studio 54! Disco was shiny, sparkly, slinky and full on chic. Go for a barely there slip dress, jumpsuit, wide collar button up shirt or leisure suit. Take a cue from Cindy Crawford shown here!

There are a lot of makeup looks to go with this as well from dewy and natural to glittery and over the top. Go for big bouncy hair to complete the look.

8. Masquerade

Want an excuse to buy a gorgeous evening gown or rock a full length cape? This is your chance! Grab a gorgeous suit or gown and add a fancy mask to conceal your true identity (Halloween Queen/King!).

Make-up is sultry and seductive. Accentuate the eyes and lips. Canes and fans make excellent accessories. We’ll be drawing inspiration from the 2006 Sofia Coppola film, Marie Antoinette. If you want to add a mask to a glam outfit you already own, try channeling Kendall Jenner or Cara Delevingne shown here. Tres chic!

9. Skeleton

You may not initially think of glamour when you think of a skeleton, but it totally can be. If you saw Jennifer Lopez a few years ago or one of the countless makeup influencers online last year, there is a lot of inspiration to choose from. Isn’t she the most glamorous skeleton you’ve ever seen?

The makeup is key here and the costume is secondary. There are a lot of fun hairstyles you can do to go with this look as well-sleek and chic or flowy and bohemian.

10. Rock

80’s rock was the ultimate GLAM look of it’s time. Get a hairband style wig and combine with influences from your favorite groups. Ripped jeans, ripped t-shirts, studs, belts, scarves, jewelry, mesh, and velvet all work here. Cindy Crawford and her family did a fun recreation for Halloween a few years ago. As did Harry Styles when he went as Elton John.

Eyeliner and light blush are key for this look. Bonus points if you carry around an inflatable guitar or microphone!

Now get out there and rock that totally GLAM new look this Halloween! If you’re looking for more Halloween fun check out Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas Using Your Own Clothes and our Top Halloween Accessories 2022.
